Privacy policy

1. Joint controllers

Fernstudium Talk is jointly operated (50/50 collaboration) by:

This notice describes only the processing operations that take place directly on fernstudium-talk.de. For external processing (e.g. when you switch to YouTube) the privacy policies of the respective partners and providers apply.

2. Hosting

This site is delivered as a static website. The hosting provider stores technically necessary server logs (IP address, timestamp, requested URL, user agent) to defend against attacks. Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) f GDPR (legitimate interest in stable operation).

3. Voting feature

When you vote on topics we process the following data on our own server:

  • Number of votes per topic (aggregated, not personal).
  • A hashed value of your IP address combined with the topic ID: for a limited time (30 seconds), only to prevent automated repeat votes shortly after a vote. The IP is hashed immediately with a non-reversible procedure (SHA-256 with salt) and is not stored in plain text.
  • Your browser additionally stores locally (LocalStorage, key fst-voted) which topics you've already voted on. This information never leaves your device.

Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) f GDPR (legitimate interest in fair, abuse-resistant voting). Consent is not required because the processing is technically necessary to operate the feature.

Storage period: aggregated votes are stored permanently. The hashed IP value is overwritten or deleted after the 30-second window.

4. Cookies & local storage

This site uses no tracking cookies. The only items stored locally are:

  • fst-cookie-consent: your cookie choice (LocalStorage).
  • fst-voted: the topics you've already voted on (LocalStorage, ca. 12 months).

You can delete these entries at any time through your browser settings.

5. Contact

If you reach us by email at redaktion(at)fernstudium-talk.de we process your data (name, email, message content) solely to respond. Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) b or f GDPR. Storage: until your request is resolved, then per applicable retention obligations.

6. External services & embeds

Episodes are hosted on YouTube (Google Ireland Limited). We do NOT embed YouTube videos directly; we link to them. A data transmission to Google only occurs once you actively click the link and navigate to youtube.com. Google's privacy policy applies from that point.

7. Your rights

You have the right of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20), and objection (Art. 21) under the GDPR. Complaints can be filed with the competent supervisory authority.
